The Role of SMEs for Sustainable Development

SMEs account for 97.3% or 645,136 of total business establishments in Malaysia (2011 Census)

SMEs also contributed 65.5% of total employment and 17.6% of total exports.

About 19.7% of total SMEs are women-controlled.

Average compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of SMEs was 7.0%, which was higher than the 4.9% CAGR of the overall economy (2005-15)

77% of total SMEs are micro-enterprises, 20% are small-sized SMEs and 3% are medium-sized SMEs.

  • SMEs form the critical base in the supply chains of large companies.
  • MSMEs (collectively) may produce more pollution than big businesses.
  • MSMEs are crucial in increasing incomes for the bottom 40 percent of the world’s population.

The Constraints of SMEs in Adopting Sustainability Principles

Low awareness on the importance of Sustainability

Low awareness of business owners of the benefits of Sustainability practices

Poor access to affordable financial resources

Inadequate and insufficient skills and management practises

Insufficient information to adopt and implement Sustainability

  • Poor application of sustainability principles to the social, economic, & technical realities of small businesses.
  • Poor knowledge of the negative impacts and competitive disadvantages of sustainability issues inherent in small businesses.
  • Lack of foresight on the future of business landscape shaped by physical & transition risks of sustainability.

The Current Disposition of SMEs Towards Sustainability

What SMEs typically have to say about Sustainability?

Not Important, but we can explore

Our focus is on building a competitive and profitable business. Sustainability is akin to philanthropy or charity and it's not mission-critical for business.

Important, but financially constrained

We do see the growing importance, especially as an 'expectation' from our stakeholders. However, we like to prioritize allocation of financial resources towards profitability generation and business growth.

Important, but technically constrained

We are convinced of the importance, for we see how sustainability risks can impact business performance and growth. However, we do not have the skill-sets as well as budgets to afford expertise

The Future Disposition of SMEs Towards Sustainability

Our Aspiration is to help progress SMEs from Level 1 to Level 3 in Year One of Engagement
and to Level 4 by Year Three of Engagement
